Learning Vs. Understanding

Education is not the learning of facts, but training of the mind to think
— Albert Einstein

I have a little confession to make. I am a little obsessed with learning. But not only learning... I am seeking to also understand. And to truly understand anything, we cannot just learn the facts and observe others. Instead we must get involved and take the knowledge that is being given and apply it to our own situation. We then need to test it against our own thoughts, belief systems, experiences and desires in order to fully integrate it into our mindset and way of thinking.

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (one of yoga's most respected teachers) said: "yoga is 1% theory and 99% practice".  Whether on the mat, or in any other area of learning and skill development this advice rings true. To master something we must learn more than fact and theory. We must put this knowledge into practice.

One of the best areas to seek not only to learn but to actually understand is in ourselves. Self awareness of self understanding is the key to your ability to better manage your health, wealth, relationships, happiness and to creating more well-being in your life.

It is the understanding of your thoughts, feelings and emotions, beliefs, attitudes and habits towards everything in life. As I always say to others "when it comes to managing money well, we need to manage ourselves well..."
